Thieves broke in on Wednesday night, coming over the wall from the water; they broke open the window of Grantham's study, opened every box and took them and from the little dressingroom anything with gold on, and some dressing plate on the table; from the dining room they took a pair of buckles and an inkstand (but that was left on the window-sill); in short, all medals, rings and antiques, and a miniature of "Old Noll". They were probably disturbed by two maids going down between 4 and 5 a.m. to wash - about then several men in a boat were seen by watermen going up the river. Glad neither she nor Grantham heard them. Thieves not yet discovered. On Thursday night there were people lurking about Privy Garden and attempted Sir Peter Burrell's house, but were heard by servants. Sir Sampson Wright has promised to set people to watch. Tommy behaved well at the christening, and Master Philip continues well. Privy Council meeting. War news.
