- Scope and ContentFirst letter: Everyone has been demobilised and only the brigade major, staff captain and writer are left to do all the work. Has had lunch with Lushington ; he was at Marlborough and the 'shop' with the writer; they were posted together and parted at Verchin. Would like to get out for a ride and to take some photographs, but cannot leave the telephone. Discusses the weather; still a lot of snow about. Every Wednesday the writer goes to the wholesale canteen to buy stuff for the mess - mostly drinks, usually between 200 and 300 francs. The meals are more elaborate in the general's mess than any other the writer has been in. It costs 4 francs a day; the old mess was 2 francs a day. Second letter: Weather bitterly cold. Went out in the car to a distant farm to look for Boche ammunition reported to be there, but found none. Took some photos of the battery at Cuesmes, and had dinner there; Colonel Le Pelley and Colonel Bullen were there. Bullen knew Uncle 'Bunny' in India. Asks parents to send his brown shoes and some socks.
