'...though born in Germany, I should not like to see an army triumph which has .... employed methods which fill a decent man's soul with horror and shame.' Refers to the difficulty of proving loyalty, and the oath of allegiance he took when taking naturalisation. 'The certificate of naturalisation is not a mere scrap of paper, and I despise people who would look upon it as a commercial asset.'
