  • Scope and Content
‘I will reply to yours of 13 but have to write as best I can from bed. Moreover the pressure of my time is very great at present and my power of work extremely limited. There is a sudden revival of peerage claims which will make large claims on my time. Happily, I can, at any rate, reply without question to the chief query in your letter, viz ‘Todem’ and ‘Aubigny’ of Belvoir. You will find my report on the municiments at Belvoir in part IV of the R.H. commissioners report on The Duke of Rutland’s mss. I have there cleared up the famous Taxny d’ Aubigny puzzle. If you cannot get hold of this, let me know. At present I cannot get to my library. With regard to the ‘Alibinis’, the chief point, as I hold, is that the Belvoir line were Bretons (distinguished as Albini Brito) from ‘Aubigne’ (Ille-et-Vilaine) North of Rennes, while ‘Albini Princerna’ came from an Aubigny in the Cotentin (Manche). The Cainhoe line were very troublesome. The catalogue of ancient deeds I think has some good documents on them.’
