Clophill: plans, cross and longitudinal sections of the dual carriageway improvement scheme, includes cross sections of constructional details and a geological bore hold chart for the route (Ref: A6/5/176). Work on this project began in 1937, most of the plans are dated August 1938 or Jan 1939. It was stopped by the Second World War in 1940 and was resumed post war - the bore holes drawings date from 1946. It was finally resumed and completed in c. 1961. See the following sources: County Surveyor's Reports, Section 16, 23 January 1937 and Section 20, 20 December 1958 respectively. (Refs: Hi/V/160/3 and Hi/V/160/6), and photograph of work in progress in 1961 (Ref: Hi/PH/19) Engineers: F W Smart, L J Wyatt and S W Lynn, Bedfordshire County Surveyors Original Refs: A6/5/19-36, 43-48, 53-61, 66, 68a, 70, 75-76, 84, 100-101, 105, 134-135, and A507/10/2 The whole route is marked out in portions numbered 0 at the Silsoe end beyond the proposed roundabout, and 100 – the end of the dualling just beyond Deadman’s Hill layby. Submitted to the Ministry of Transport in 1938/1939. These have plan numbers and smaller numbers in circles (given here in brackets). The small numbers are a running sequence the plan numbers generally appear to indicate that these are later revisions. The drawings have been arranged by content rather than plan number. These drawings carry the title London-Carlisle-Glasgow-Inveness Improvement Scheme. Ones by Bedfordshire County Council County Surveyor, dating from between 1946 and probably the end of the scheme. These have sheet numbers but generally also carry A6/5 numbers. Titles vary.
