    Highway Scheme Plans: A6, London-Carlisle-Inverness Trunk Road, Bedfordshire Section The A6 was subject to a series of improvement schemes in the 1930s. The Luton-Harpenden section was reconstructed in 1931-1932 and the Luton-Bedford section was partly reconstructed in stages from 1935 up to the outbreak of war in 1939. This scheme included proposed by-passes for Barton, Elstow, Silsoe and Wilstead which in some cases were never proceeded with. Major post war improvements included: the construction of the Wilstead By-pass in 1973-1978, Silsoe By-pass in 1979-1980 and the provision of a dual carriageway over Deadman's Hill, Clophill, work on which was started in 1936, but was not completed until the 1960s.
