6th August: Thomas Barber visited the three condemned criminals Costin, Hewlett & Parsons having recieved a reprieve, were in the yard with the other prisoners under sentence, & he regrets to sa, were far from exhibiting those emotions of gratitude for the remission of the capital part of their sentence; which might have been expected; & which the exercise o such an act of mercy ought to have excited in them. They mingled promiscously with the other prisoners, were silent & apparently unaffected when solemnly addressed on the change of their condition. Hewlett was smoking his pipe at the time.
