  • Title
    Bedford St. Peter; monument in the churchyard to former Rector Nicholas Aspinall. Summary of Latin inscription: under this sepulchre are deposited the mortal remains of Reverend Nicholas Aspinall M.A., born at Standen, Lancashire, educated at the grammar school of Clitheroe, alumnus of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. In gratitude for £100 given in the will of Edmund Castell which allowed him to learn oriental languages he left £100 for study of the literary arts at New College, Oxford. Latin verse praising Aspinall’s virtues written underneath (presumably copied from other side of monument). Watercolour by Thomas Fisher.
