Archival history
This collection of paintings by the prolific watercolourist Thomas Fisher, c1772-1836, probably originate from material held by the Shuttleworth Trustees who disposed of it, much of it ending up with the dealers Abbot and Holder from whom the donor obtained it in June 1993.
Dating the collection: only the Dunstable paintings of 1804 are dated by Fisher (see Z 1244/14-20), and the evidence points to the remaining paintings being slightly more recent in date. A few examples are watermarked between 1809 and 1816 (ref: Z 1244/35, 66 and 83) while the most recently dated monument is that of Elizabeth Bletsoe of Bedford who was buried at Wootton in 1812 (ref: Z1244/83)
Format: most of the paintings are approximately A4 in size, and their rough edges and occasional holes may indicate that they were formerly in a volume (an extra-illustrated Lysons?). The Dunstable paintings of 1804 (ref: Z 1244/14-20) are considerably bigger at approx. 17 x 12 inches.
