Agreement
Parties:
(i) John, 6th Duke of Bedford;
(ii) Robert Lindsell and William Hogg, both of Biggleswade, brewers
Reciting:
- (ii) held from (i) a window projecting from the S side of the George Inn, Bedford, owned by (ii), over part of the yard in front of the Swan Inn of (i) at an annual rent of 5/- per annum [see R6/5/12/30];
- at the last election for Bedford “a Riot arose by which considerable mischief was done both to the George Inn and to the Swan Inn and it has been represented to the said Duke that the said Riot arose from the circumstance of the Adherents of one party being addresses from the Windows of the Swan Inn and those of the other from the said projecting window and of the adherents of both parties being thereby brought together in the Swan Yard at one time in an angry and excited state and the said Duke has been requested to give notice to the said Robert Lindsell and William Hogg to remove the said projecting Widow and build up the opening in the Wall through which the same projects in order to prevent the recurrence of similar Riots and mischiefs at future Elections but the said Robert Lindsell and William Hogg apprehending that the removal of the said projecting Window and the Building up of the said wall would materially injure the said George Inn have requested the said Duke not to insist thereon but to allow them to continue to hold the same of the said Duke as Tenants from year to year and in Consideration of his consenting to such request have agreed to execute these presents”
Operative Part:
- (i) agreed to (ii) holding the window as tenants from year to year at 5/- per annum rent as long as sashes were screwed down during elections and (ii) did not allow anyone to make speeches from the window
