  • Scope and Content
The Bedford Girls’ Modern School opened in 1882 on a site in Bromham Road (previously known as Harpur Green) next to the High School. In 1892 the School moved to a site in St Paul’s Square adjoining the river between the then Town Hall and Shire Hall. By 1920 the School had rented Dame Alice House (then East Lodge), Cardington Road, which was bought by the Harpur Trust in 1927. The school playing fields lay east of Dame Alice House, between Cardington Road and the river. In 1937 the School moved to new buildings on this Cardington Road site. The Abbey and Abbey Cottage, Duckmill Lane, were sold to the Trust in 1951, and Wing House in 1954. The Abbey was demolished, but Abbey Cottage and Wing House were incorporated into the School. Howard House, Cardington Road, was acquired from Barnardo’s and developed as the junior school in 1981-2.
