Scope and Content
On Sunday about St. Luke's day 1714 he saw Bolton drinking in the Bell, Felmersham (where he sometimes came to read the news, & where deponent then lived), with Sir Thomas Alston or his brother. & Major Aspin & others, & believes he was then drunk, for though the others went home he stayed the night; but at no other time did he see him disguised by drinking', though sometimes 'merry'. Has heard Bolton had a fall from horse & was brought into Castle Inn, Bletsoe, but has heard Mr. Archer (his master) say that Bolton was not then in drink. Deponent never saw him behave 'unbecoming his function.' At Midsummer 1713 Bolton came with bailiffs to deponent's house & seized goods for landlord Wagstaff of Colworth; he bought provisions for Wagstaff’s household & gave orders for ploughing & manuring of Wagstaff's fields.
