- Scope and ContentRichard Crowsley declares that Katherine Rands spinster and Henry Ventris and wife Mary on 2 April 8 [George I 1722] at Radwell demised Manor of Radwell to Richard Crowsley with one messuage, one cottage, 50 acres land, 12 acres meadow and 40 acres pasture in Radwell and Felmersham from 26 March last for five years. Richard Crowsley entered and was in possession until John Rands and Thomas Lovell forcibly ejected him 2 April 1722 to his damage of £10. Plea: John Rands and Thomas Lovell plead not guilty (Lease Entry and Ouster for what is in their or their tenants possession is confessed by rule of court.) Plaintiff’s Title. [marginal notes will be shown thus: ( )] Edward Rands was in possession of the manor of Radwell and suffered a recovery Hilary Term 34 Elizabeth [1592] [see 2] recites 3 [copying errors: Mich for Nicholas; Broome for Boone] (this deed was found by Mr. Salisbury amongst Mrs. Katherine Rands writings) copies of 4 and 5 examined and proved by Ambrose Reddall Heralds’ Visitation of 1634 [V269,V270] “underwritten [? signed] by Oliver Rands Gentleman the Lessor of the Plaintiff’s Grandfather the book proved by Mr. Dale in the Harralds Office and that it is usual for the Gentleman to make these Entries themselves” (Compare this entry with the hand writing of Old Oliver to the deed next mentioned and with another deed 1 October 16 James I [1618; number 3]) 1 Giles ; children - Dorothy & Oliver; no issue 2 William - no issue 3 Oliver junior ; children - Katherine & Mary 4 Edward; Child - John in possession recites 6 (Oliver junior was the lessor of the plaintiff’s father) (witnesses to this deed, Solomon Lort [Henry Lord in original] and Thomas Allen de la Greene) said Oliver Rands senior had issue as above recites 7 recites V271 Oliver baptised 1625, here described as the lessor of the plaintiff’s father. (see Register of Felmersham, proved by Mr. Benbar) Mr. John Pratt son of above Cecilia Rands, Cecilia Bacchus daughter of Edward Rands and sister to the defendant, prove that their uncle William Rands died without issue at Mr. Cornicks in Leadenhall Street about 29 years since. Mr. Pratt has often heard his mother say that his uncle Edward the defendant’s father, was apprenticed to his uncle William Rands and that she then kept her brother William’s house. (John Pratt; Mrs. Bacchus) William Rands was buried 27 November 1693 at Katherine Cree Church, London. see copy of Register proved by Ambrose Reddall. recites V272 and V274 (these books may be produced by Mr. Dale who has an attested copy under the clerk’s hand and will swear the same to be literally true) Mrs. Cecilia Bacchus daughter of Edward Rands and sister to defendant, has often heard her father say that he was his father’s youngest son. Mr. Oliver Rands the late possessor of the Manor and premises has declared to several persons that Mrs. Katherine Rands and Mrs. Mary Ventris who are the lessors of the plaintiff, were his heirs at law and that if he made no will his estate would fall to them. (proved by William Asplin) administration of goods of Oliver Rands was granted to Katherine Rands, the lessor of the plaintiff; and possessed of his stock,manor house and real estate and sold most of the goods and sowed the arable land with wheat and left Peter Easton and his wife in possession of the manor house and premises for them until 15 November last when Easton and wife were gone out of the house upon business to the defendant John Rands and his daughter; shut them out and refused them entrance and has ever since kept possession. (Peter Easton, Rebecca Easton) Mrs. Rands and Mrs.Ventris,.lessors of the plaintiff, hired Edward Crouch to plough and sow the Beare Land for them – ploughed some of it but was disturbed by the defendant Rands who procured several persons to plough the same, cut timber and commit waste, (Edward Crouch) This John Rands about six months before Oliver’s death came from London to Radwell to be kept by him upon charity and remained there after his death having no place to go to [he] used the aforesaid means to get into possession.
