  • Scope and Content
“Lord Hertford was here the day before yesterday, and told me that whatever might have been thrown out in common conversation it was firmly his belief Lady MacCartney, had no desire or instruction that any part of these should be published, “Lord Hertford also believes that the Heir-at-law has no right over them and at her death she will be able to leave them to someone or somepeople or give instructions for them to be burnt then. About the papers “if I may have a paper drawn out consigning them to you (when I dye)” I saw Mrs. Hume on Sunday and she told me she thought she should certainly remain here in London with her brother-in-law for a year”. “General Benson and I looked over several more drawers and a multitude of papers but found not one line of direction concerning any of them, so I now do begin quit to despair of finding any”. Again asks for his opinion. Found out that Lord MacCartney had deposited a sealed box at Coutts so General Benson went to collect it. It did not contain any notes on what to do with the paper “but instead of such discovered rouleau’s and notes to the value of a thousand guiness”. [A rouleau is a roll of gold coins].
