- Scope and ContentThe collection falls naturally into 3 sections: the Tempsford (Bedfordshire) section relating to the estate of William Stuart, and the two Penn sections relating to the estates of that family in England and Pennsylvania. The presence of the Penn family manuscripts in WY is accounted for by the fact that William Stuart, Archbishop of Armagh married Sophia, daughter of Thomas Penn one of the sons of William Penn the colonist. WY445-649 are deeds of Penn property in England and Ireland. The Pennsylvanian manuscripts are a miscellaneous collection of interest.
- Archival historyIn 1938 a schedule of the Stuart deeds at Tempsford Hall was sent to the county Record office by Messrs Ferrer and Co. The deeds comprised in this schedule were received in March 1948 (Acc 1826) in very good order, in 20 wrapped and numbered bundles. They form WY25-444. In June 1948 the 24 medieval deeds for Tempsford and the Penn Pennsylvanian manuscripts were deposited (Acc 1840) and are WY1-24, 445-902. At the same time the naval manuscripts of Admiral Sir William Penn (C17th) and of Admiral Sir C M Pole (1757-1830) were deposited by Mrs Wynne in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. A further deposit was received from Capt. Owen Wynne in 1968 (Acc 3005) and catalogued WY903-1029.
