Letter to William Stuart from Frederick Hervey [4th Earl of Bristol & Lord Bishop of Derry]. Sent from Milan Castle. William’s letter to him only arrived yesterday as it had been intercepted by the French. Writer has been taken hostage by the French [In 1798 he was taken prisoner and imprisoned at Milan for suspected espionage. He was held in custody for eighteen months] 'They are a nest of theives and a gang of highwaymen even among themselves.'

Reference to the diocese, the number of parsonages and ornamental churches, popish chapels and dissenting meeting houses; the writer encouraged the building of houses of worship of every denomonation. Reference to the writer's residence: 'I think it better for my diocese ... that should reside abroad than in my grave.' States that he could not remain in Ireland without a house in a healthy part of his demesne.
