- Scope and Content- Believes civil war inevitable and that 'it will fall more or less on my family I have not a doubt, therefore think I have taken the wisest part in leaving the country.' - Reference to the siege of Charleston [American Revolutionary War] - 'Tomorrow the boy sets out for Geneva'. Reference to Mr Battine [tutor?]. Asks William to visit on his way to Switzerland and explian his ideas to Battine. - The King has given consent for the writer to pass the summer where he pleases, so will fix his abode at Geneva, where he hopes to meet William. - Lady Mountstuart is much better. - Reference to a ball given in consequence of the christening of his son George Stuart, named after the King.
