The writ had been delivered to the Sheriff, who has issued the precept to the returning officers. There is no opposition to Mr Stuart [John Stuart, son of John, 1st Marquis of Bute] being chosen. Details the arrangements made.

    Herbert [son of writer], is in good health, though his spirit is 'much depressed'; hopes William has settled something for him. Herbert wants company and amusement which may draw him out of himself, but cannot, at present, have such in England. The writer hopes that after a few months abroad, Herbert may be able to return to England and succeed in the law. Reference to the possibility of Herbert going to Lyons. A prudent governor or companion would be desirable. 'His conduct over the next three months will in great measure decide his character and success through life.' Mentions Mr Whitmore, who has conducted himself so properly through this business, and has been put to much trouble and anxiety. 'Some compensation must be given to the woman...'
