  • Scope and Content
Sent from Bedford to Miss Higgins, School House, Tempsford, Bedford. Message reads: "2.5.06 Many thanks for your nice PC with good wishes. We had a holdiay from school on Monday & so I spent the day at Shefford, and am going to commence work this evening. Trusting that you are feeling better than you did last Saturday. Yours affectionally A E B." [The Miss Higgins the card was sent to is likely to have been one of the three daughters of William Higgens, schoolmaster of Tempsford, and his wife, Maria. On the 1901 census Lilian, Annie and Margaret were all living at home but by 1911 Lilian had gone to be a nurse in the family of a Brazilian businessman in Kensington. Annie Phoebe (born 1884) is possibly the most likely. She became an uncertificated teacher at the school in 1902 and then gained her certificate in 1907. Margaret Victoria (born 1887) also worked at Tempsford school from 1901 but left in 1907.]
