  • Scope and Content
John Burton, described as yeoman, says that he has known the manor of Podington 3-score years, and that Tyringham and his ancestors have held the Dovehouse lands time out of mind. They consist of a close wherein a dovehouse stood; 2 closes called Great and Little Barcrofte and other lands to the extent of 50 or 60 acres. These closes were held of the manor of Podington by suit of court and 34 shillings rent. The whole of Hinwick Hall Field is held by Tyringham of the same manor by suit of court and 6 shillings rent. Tyringham has also until recently paid 16d spout silver, but whether it goeth out of the Spout close he knoweth not. These three rents were always paid while the manor was crown property, but after it came to Bredyman’s hands, Tyringham began to cavil. The lords of the manor of Podington have also been accounted owners of waifs and strays taken in Hinwick Hall Field “unto the posterne gate of Henewicke Hall”, and he remembers two geldings of the old Lord Mordaunt, one bay and one black, being taken about 60 years ago. Two selions of wood in the Rowe hedge in the same field also belong to the manor.
