  • Title
Manuscript long parchment roll, in Latin, of staff and pupils at Bedford School, containing approximately 70 surnames, headed by masters J and T Brereton. Includes an undated attached note written by Herbert Chitty (Secretary to the Governing Body and College archivist 1920s-1940s) that the roll was presented to him by Theodore Kensington, a scholar at the College in 1856, and later a master from 1870 to 1904. Chitty goes on: The Headmaster of the School used to be appointed by New College, Oxford, and therefore was usually a Wykehamist. See A F Leach Hist of Winchester College, pp304-5, Dr J Brereton, the H.M. on this long roll was a Wykehamist. So also was T. Brereton, the Usher.
