  • Scope and Content
Notes on the property These documents apparently relate to the formation of what was afterwards called Washingley manor, Cranfield, probably by a branch of the main Washingley family which held the manor of Washingley, Huntingdonshire Victoria County History, Bedfordshire iii, 276-7 gives little information on this manor in the C13-14th, and none between 1353 and 1515. These charters show the accumulation of land by William of Washingley and his wife Maud no date William of Washingley and his wife Eleanor ?c. 1270-1310 William of Washingley and his wife Agnes occurs 1311, 1313 John of Washingley occurs 1341, 1360 It appears that Agnes, wife of the third William of Washingley, was Agnes de Den, coheiress of Stukeley manor, Huntingdonshire. Victoria County History, Bedfordshire ii, 231 states that Agnes de Den married William of Washingley, and supposes that her husband belonged to the main line of the Washingley family at Washingley, Huntingdonshire, but gives no William in the main line at this or any other time. See below William of Washingley of Cranfield's release to Sir Henry de Deen in 1312, shortly before his death. After this Agnes married John Moriz (see the dispute over Agnes' dower, Cart. Rames iii, 61, 71; and see below, release by John Moriz, 1338). It may be that from the time of William and Agnes and of the minority of their son John the family's headquarters were at Stukeley, Huntingdonshire, which would account for the lack of further information in Victoria County History, Bedfordshire. The line at Stukeley ended with an heiress in 1464, after which it changed hands several times; it is probable that the Bedfordshire estate was then sold separately if this had not already happened. Presumably it was thus that Washingley manor, Cranfield, came to the hands of Thomas Stafford by whom in 1515 it was sold to Richard Langley (Victoria County History, Bedfordshire, iii, 277). The only indication of manorial status in these documents is in 1341 when there is a reference to a three-weekly court held by John of Washingley. No explanation is at present offered for the presence of these manuscripts at Winchester, other than that they were acquired by a previous archivist in the belief that they were related to Clanfield, Hampshire, where the College has property. Note on dating Previous to 1287 the documents are undated. Apart from the rough guide given by the names of William and Maud, and William and Eleanor, the following points suggest a possible order: Sir Geoffrey Rolond or Rodlond: Geoffrey son of Roland, witnesses WN1-6; probably the same as Geoffrey Rodlond who witnesses most documents WN7-30; with his son Richard WN23, WN24, WN26, WN30; as Sir Geoffrey Rodlond, knight WN31-47; and up to 1291. Richard Rodlond witnesses at first usually with his father, and dated documents up to 1307. Maurice, vicar of Cranfield 1248-69, witnesses a number of documents Alan Pinnoc witnesses WN36, WN41, WN51; and thence until 1300; Robert Pinnoc witnesses from 1293 onwards John Heremer witnesses WN3, WN30, WN31, WN39A; Roger Heremer WN38, and in 1293, 1294, 1297 The following occur so frequently as not to be of much assistance:- John Olney from WN4 onwards till his death which had occurred by 1297, Ralf Mareschal from WN1 onwards to 1304 Robert of Bourne from WN27 onwards till his death which had occurred by 1304 Walter of Bourne (brother to Robert) was dead by 1296 Simon son of Payn occurs from WN1-46 Gilbert son of Walter occurs from WN4 till 1291 The following are references in B.H.R.S. volumes:- Burn, Roger de la, 1227 iii, 12 Born, Sibil daughter of Richard, 1260 vi, 170 Cranfield, Geoffrey de, 1272 xix, 113 Gervase de, 1223 xiii, 86 Gilbert de, 1227 iii, 12 Richard de, 1200/27 x, 32, 370 Robert son of Richard de, 1240 ix, 86 (and wife Petronilla) 1195-6 vi, 8 More, Peter de, 1240 vi, 118 Megre, Robert le, 1240 vi, 118 Marescall, William le, 1227 iii, 12, 116, 174 Ralf le, 1272 xix, 113 Olney, John of, 1260, 1284 vi, 170; xii, 31 Passelewe, Peter, 1247 xxi, 200 Payn, Simon son of, 1247 xxi, 161 Rodland, 1179-94 ix, 179 Rolland and Oliver, brothers of Cranfield parson, 1202 i, 223 Suthwud, Muriel de, 1227 iii, 116, 180 Wroxhill, William son of Richer of, 1247 xxi, 200 Simon of, 1219 vi, 54 Richer of, 1240, 1280/90 ix, 79; xix, 33 Philip of, 1240 ix, 79 Ralf and Thomas of, 1180 vii, 38 [note: in this collection of deeds, cultura seems to mean "furlong"]
