  • Scope and Content
dear Miss Milnes - obliged by your news respecting your younger sister's marriage. "I was at the elegant Fancy Dress Ball at Bedford on the 27th of March, and enjoyed it exceedingly. a Young lady from London accompanied me to the Ball, who, like myself, from its Novelty, was much gratified with it. Two hundred and eleven persons were there,. I must now give you an account of some of the costumes of the Nobility.. The Marchioness of Tavistock, as Mary Queen of Scots, very splendid dress - her son Lord Russell in the costume of a nobleman of the last centuy. His Aunt, Lady Caroline Stanhope, as Queen Elizabeth, a costly dress, with brilliant ornaments. Honourable Mr. Phipps in a rich costume of Charles 2nd - Lord Marcus Hill ? in a rich Military Uniform - Lord Ongley as a Greek. The dress altogether were superb, and the Jewellry uncommonly beautiful. Lady M Palmer, Lady Duberly and daughter, Lady Payne and Miss Mono[u]x, were amongst the Company. the Waltz appeared the rage of the night, with a few country dances. On the Tuesday I went to the Bezar at the Swan inn, where I was much amused during the Sale. The Marchioness of Tavistock, most elegantly attired, presided at her Stall, as did Lady M Palmer at another, and the Honourable Mrs Bedford at a Third. I purchased a handsome Reticule. The room was prettily ornamated, and quite full of Town and County people. They collected five hundred pounds for the benefit of the Infirmary and fifty pounds at the Ball". We went to Campton and took Sarah [Kidman] with us to visit our cousin Williamsons. Miss Enderby. (This is not deposited at the Record Office - for information only.)
