  • Admin/biog history
Between the Dissolution and 1562, the property was first leased to Sir John St. John in 1537 (GY2/1), who held it a short time only; then to Sir William Gascoigne (GY2/1), who had been obliged to give up to the king for Ampthill Park lands in Houghton Conquest (VCH iii, 292); in1545 it was transferred from Gascoigne to Anthony Cokett, from whom it came to William Gery. Its subsequent descent in the family, hampered by difficulties aggravated by the Civil War, is traced in the private act of 1661 (GY3/7). In spite of the provision in this act for its sale, it remained in the family, until Hester Gery, who married Hugh Wade in 1792, bought up her sisters' portions, and thence it has continued in the Wade-Gery family.

Of related families: for Bell, see also WG885-9, shrievalty of Robert Bell, probably ancestor of Mary Gery, nee Bell. For Francklin, see FN. For Welby: the Welby collection at Denton has been examined by the Lincolnshire archivists; the Cecil Higgins museum has a set of embroidered chairs dated 1722, believed to be the work of Eleanor Welby, afterwards Eleanor Gery. An important document in the collection (GY10), the survey of 1622-8, is not Gery at all, but St. John. However, the surveyor, Evans Mouse, had also done work for the Gery family (see GY4/1-2).

Dr G H Fowler (died 1940) reported on the collection for the Historic Manuscripts Commission. The majority of the collection that he saw then were deposited with the County Record Office in 1953. However, some documents were not traced at the time of deposit. A number of these are copies, or minor manuscripts.; but those of interest include: terriers of the parsonage of Eaton Socon, 1426/7 and 1558/9; court roll, Eaton, 1633 (paper) and 4 documents relating to the Civil War and Commonwealth. The Wade-Gery and Morrison correspondence and documents were retained by the Wade-Gery family at the time of deposit but the Record Office was allowed to make a calendar of these. These appear in this catalogue as GY11 PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT HOLD THESE DOCUMENTS AND DO NOT KNOW OF THEIR CURRENT LOCATION. One document not seen by Dr. Fowler came to light (GY1/3).
