Beckingham. Dreadful fire at Caddington - Jallands stacks all fired, the work of an incendiary. Papa [John Milnes] set off to walk to Caddington without a great coat, and was plying the engines until one in the morning. Charles [Gery Milnes, brother] did all he could to dissaude him (I was at Newark to see Polly [Mary Charlotte Chawner] after her confinement). Consequences a most violent cough, and cold on his lungs. Polly has another little girl. The Raynes - Kitty expects to be confined in March. Would like to be with her but could not really go without Papa. Hustings at Lincoln - Reform Meeting - Sir Chas Anderson speaking, Sir R. Heron, etc. Sophia Chawner staying at time of Polly's confinement. Took her to evening service and hear Mrs Simms sing Luthers Hymn and a Handel Anthem etc. Mr Apthorpe preached, as we thought a sermon composed by himself. Sherwood Foresters [Nottinghamshire Militia] passed us one day. (This is not deposited at the Record Office - for information only.)
