  • Production date
    From: 1913 To: 1913
  • Scope and Content
The idea of forming a committee to raise funds for a statue of Sir William Harpur originated with the Mayor at the time, Harry Browning, who appears to have fallen for the erroneous theory that the statue on the Old Town Hall (former Grammar School) was a second-hand substitute. The Edwardian generation didn't realise that it was customary in the Georgian period to depict historical figures in contemporary (i.e. 18th Century) dress. Although there was considerable enthusiasm at the start of the committee, it appears to have evaporated very swiftly, so that the third meeting (in May) was the last. Note by Richard Wildman.
