  • Scope and Content
Written at Draughton Lodge. ...I am alone. Beckie has gone home for today, last evening by the six train, returns tomorrow by the 2 train. I am feeling lonely and sad; my thoughts return to the past and the future does not to my natural sight appear very encouraging. I have great pleasure though in saying that my dear little girl is a beauty. I was so disappointed you could not be got here-- somewhere between us and Thorpe Underwood by the road it was 7 ft. deep-- and everywhere too deep to attempt a transit. However, this lovely sunshine will soon clear it all away. I have not much to tell you about. I was down at Rowell [Rothwell] on Wednesday evening and called on Mrs. Hafford and Miss Bell. They were both in bed; the latter has been very unwell ever since she left you. The Doctor is in attendance and encourages her by the hope that with care all will be well. Mrs. Hafford seems in a very low way, so weak and poorly. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson[?] came in whilst I was in so the latter reported the tone of the invalids. I expect Mr. Browning will be over here tomorrow evening for Sunday, and on Wednesday Beckie is going to Caldecott to a family gathering to represent the future Mrs. B. I expect in speaking of farming interest I am apt to write in a depressed tone but not without cause. We finished thrashing out yesterday and have about 20 to 25 qrs [quarters] of wheat to sell of 17 acres of land. Of course there is some tail besides but not any more good. I am also anxious about the work; our land is so wet we are doing nothing with the horses. I hope Brighter days are in store this year; 1875 has been a very sad year to me throughout. We must brew soon and shall want some sugar and hops. Shall you be willing to supply me with what I want? Please advise me as to price and quality. I will send quantities required when I write again. I have not heard from Ramsey lately. Must close; hope to hear you can come over soon. I long to see you. Give my love to suitable friends and accept the fullness of my heart’s love and ever Remember me As Yours ever affectionate brother....
