  • Scope and Content
Written at Draughton Lodge. ...It does seem an age since I addressed a few lines to you. I do not think an occasional interchange of thoughts and ideas would do either of us any harm and it might influence us for the better. Well, after all how are you, dearest? I hope prospering all ways. One object I have in writing to you today is that Hugh when here asked me to come and see you when Alfred came which I suppose will be tomorrow, but I have not seen him this week so have heard nothing of his arrangements so would not give you to understand either way. I told him I should not come just now for reasons which are strong enough to induce me to forego that pleasure. It is not from any want of feeling towards you, my darling sister, or any of your family. But the fact is I have many duties which like a chain bind me to one spot, that is, home. I hope sometime in the summer to be able to come and see all my Harrold Friends but the weather must be a coat warmer before I venture into another climate. I have just made a start in the garden; hope to have it in order when you come, which we both hope will be very soon. Mr. Hafford gave me a lecture at Kettering Market last Friday. I am not growing in his estimation from what he says. I suppose our supposed friendship ceases but I can tell you particulars when I see you. He is a very high-spirited man and in order to be one with him must say what he says, believe ditto, whether he swerves from the line of rectitude or not any [possibly 'and'] digression from this rule meets with strong condemnation. Mother and I have been to Rothwell this morning. As I have my heart in my own possession please to accept a very large share of love (if it is run away that is another thing; I cannot help it). Well, dearest, Farewell With never ceasing, always growing affection and kisses for my little nephew who I hope is better. Believe me, Your ever affectionate frere....
