  • Scope and Content
Written at Draughton Lodge [Draughton, Northamptonshire]. My dear Mary and Hugh, As it is very wet I am come into the house and am writing this letter to you for poor Ma; she is not so bad, only she thought I might as well write having not much else to do and she feels tired this afternoon and little bit sleepy. Ma’s leg is getting better. Mr. Barwell came to see it yesterday; he says with care and rest it will soon be well. What a deal of trouble arises through a mere scratch. I received Hugh’s note on Saturday morning just as I was going to dress for market. What we had not got we could not well send you. We had not got a score in the house when Hugh’s note came. Shall we send any next week? We shall want 40 lb. of Hops at 1/10 per lb. but as Hugh wants to drink some beer he must send some worth what he charges for them or he may get some small to cool his excited tongue. Mr. Hafford seems very cool. He speaks very civil to me and just asks how my mother is but does not enter into conversation so sympathising a way he used to do a year and a half ago. Mama keeps on the couch all day. She spent her time last week on the couch in the daytime and bed at night. We get on pretty well considering. I am going to read a piece tomorrow evening entitled ‘Won’t, Can’t and Try’ by [Edwin] Paxton Hood. I hope to do it well. With our best love, I am your dear Brother....
