- Scope and ContentWritten at Orton Lodge [Orton, Northamptonshire], ‘Saturday evg.’ Enveloped endorsed ‘Miss M. Wiggins’, and marked inside the flap ‘Private’. Wishes greatly to see Mary; ‘If I could, I should have been down long long ago, but as we expect to go to London next week, Father says it is better not-- but it will be dreadful, to go and not say “good bye”, but I fancy I might just come for that. I have been writing to Lizzie thinking it might cheer her loneliness a little. ...I suppose you will not be well enough to come to Chapel tomorrow; it seems as tho’ you are continually having illness in your home, first one and then another being laid aside. An author has somewhere said "afflictions are the result of God’s jealousy of his creatures. That He takes them aside for a time, to speak with them lest they become absorbed with things around, this is His love” and is not this true, dear Mary, do we not find at times that we are entirely engrossed with this life, forgetful of that higher holier life? What have your thoughts been since you have been “taken aside”? You must dear write to me while I am in London and tell me. I should so love to hear from you-- and I shall long to renew our vestry and other chats, for we can talk on these things together can we not dear?‘ ‘...I trust the few unconnected words I have written will prove acceptable in some small degree, it will remind you of my unchanging love for you....’
