  • Note on Seals: documents AD2293-2298 each have appended to them a fine seal of the sheriff of Beds. and Bucks. That on AD2294 was repaired at the Public Record Office in 1932 and described by Dr. Fowler as follows: 'it carries a fallow buck's head for Buk', and between the palmated antlers a lantern, apparently for going to Bed. 'Sigillu Officii Vic Bed et Buk'. It appears from the letters 't r' to have been made for Tho. Reynes, sheriff in 1461/2'. The other four deeds were received later. That it was made for Tho. Reynes now seems to be endorsed by the appearance of his name among the witnesses in AD2296-8. Dr. Chibnall of Cambridge supplied the following references to Ric. Maryot of Sherington, Bks.: 1. John Maryot with Simon Moneaux, John Heton, Robt. Olney, and others purchase Caves' manor in Sherington. Close Rol, 1449. 2. Ric. Maryot of Sherington, gent. Close Roll, 1456. 3. Wm. Heton, son of John Heton, settles lands mentioned in (1) on Ric. Maryot. Charter 1480. 4. Ric. Maryot: recovery of FitzJohns manor in Sherington,1479. 5. Will of Ric. Maryot of Sherington. P.C.C. 11 Doget. 6. Inq. p.m. of Ric. Maryot, series II, 7.45. Bucks manors in Sherington, Hardmead. Beds. manor of Wroxhill in Marston. D.18 July 6 Hen. VII. (Cf. Harvey Bloom, English Seals, p.217. for seal used by Peter de Salford in 1365.) The indentation of the counterpart deeds is interesting.
