Extract from will of Mr Richard Smith, Bedford, butcher, dated 24 Oct 1775: to beloved wife Frances Smith for life, then to son Richard Smith - my butchers shop with appurtenances now in the occupation of Mr Thomas Odell in Butcher Row in Bedford; to three sons Richard Smith, John Smith and William Smith, equally between them - two messuages or tenements in Well Street now in occupations of Thomas Breadsell and Thomas Bonham, barn and orchard adjoining now in my own occupation, shops in the Butcher Row in Bedford now in my own occupation, which I purchased of Thomas Spenceley [see BorBE 3/38-43], and two closes of pasture ground called Pilcroft in Bedford St Mary lately purchased of James Lucas esquire and Mary his wife.
