  • Scope and Content
That the Corporation have sacrificed a large amount of money and income for some years by the removal of houses on the Market Hill, to enlarge the Market ... that after this great loss to the revenue of the Corporation, the space so cleared has been infringed upon and a further loss of upwards of £30 a year made to the Corporation by the building of a Corn Exchange, which while it may be a convenience to Farmers and Corn Dealers is detrimental to other parties and properties and encroaches largely on the Market Place. That after much exertion a weekly Cattle Market has been established ... but a few nervous, or meddling, or discontented, inhabitants have memorialized the Corporation or commissioners for its removal. We the undersigned however considering a good weekly cattle market an ornament and advantage to any town depricate its removal knowing how prejudicial it would be to the interests of the Rate Payers and detrimental to the tradesmen, shopkeepers and others, and would therefore respectfully suggest that instead of a separation and removal of the Cattle Market from the other market, that the Market Place be enlarged and extended, and we recommend for the consideration of the Town Council the hiring of the ground on the West side of the St Paul's Square belonging to the trustees of the Bedford Charity being convinced that the removal of the old buildings would afford ample space for a Cattle Market in a convenient situation, easy of access, bring an additional revenue to the Corporation and aid the funds of the Bedford Charity now unable to meet the ordinary payments without a reduction from each branch of the Charity.
