’My dear Kate, I certainly did not receive the estimates you mention so have written Ampthill for a copy. I suppose I may take it that the Church Council will take over the gate. The history of the Parish Room is as follows: My father died without making a new will & consequently his will of 1876 held good. The Parish Room was part of the estate & on my mother’s death came to Mary, Maud & to me. We decided to offer it to you outright but your father raised some objection to this as I believe he did not wish to be responsible for repairs. After some correspondence Chandler drafted his letter under instructions from your father. All I did was to offer the room to you as I did not want it. Mary & Maud also had no use for it. I confess that I had completely forgotten the Chandler letter if I ever saw it & was quite convinced that you were the sole owner. Anyway you still have the sole control subject to the right of the Vicar to use it for Church purposes. The church was clear & Parish Council don’t come into the picture. What bitter weather we have had for Xmas. It is quite mild today. I am glad as it is the winter golf meeting Tuesday & Wednesday & I have promised to play tennis tomorrow. I hope your new vicar will be a success. You are lucky to have found a man with private means. They don’t seem to be plentiful these days. Maggie has not been well lately. She did too much in Suffolk when she went to see her mother. Now she is to rest all she can & has been ordered to drink Whiskey & to eat China Clay between meals. Rather a strange diet but she is much better. She sends her love will all good wished for the New Year.’
