  • Scope and Content
‘My dear Kate, Thanks for your letter. I hope you & Mr Moncleton will be able to settle the Parish room. Anyway the Church Council & Church Wardens must be out of court as they have never been mentioned in any deed or letter. I thought you were to let me have an estimate for repairs to the Lych Gate & also would ascertain from the Church Council whether they would take it over. It is not much good to repair the gate if no one wants it as it is only putting off the day when it will cease to exist. Maggie is still on her strict diet & has at least another year. It must be very trying to be only allowed to eat the food you don’t fancy. Sorry to hear you have had colds. I have staved them off this year with the help of a Boots nose irrigator & Glycerin of Thymol or in spite of them. Anyway I have had no colds so far. Since I last wrote I have become a Trade Unionist. Mr Havelock Wilson has started a new union to substitute conciliation & arbitration for strikes. I sent him a donation & to my surprise received in return a card of membership & a beautiful button. Quite a good scheme. Everyone ought to join. The subscription is only 2/6. I enclose a 10/- note will you kindly pass it on to Whittington who is I suppose still looking after the grass [?] at present I am busy trying to sell the picture which used to stand in Hall at Flitwick. You said to be a primitive of the 14th century. My uncle bought it from Rome when he was excavating the Forum – an altar piece taken from the church of St Maria of the Rope Walk which was demolished. So far I only spend money on having it restored but they say it is worth £600 to £800. I hope it is but I can’t think that many people would give it. With all good wishes for Xmas & the New Year from us both.’
