  • Scope and Content
‘My Dear Kate, Mr Petley seems bent on making a nuisance of himself to the end. I don’t know what arrangement you made with Mr Petley about the use of the room but we certainly made it over to you unconditionally & you have every right to do as you please with it. The delay in answering you letter is due to my absence from home. Barbara & I have been paying a visit to Bayeux, Caen & Rouen & had quite a good time except that it was very cold at Rouen. I learnt quite a lot of history as I had no idea we were so much mixed up with Normandy long before the conquest. France is certainly very cheap to us now as Travelling & Hotels are only about ½ the prewar rate. I have given in at last & have bought a car. At present the girls spend all their time in it but I suppose the keenness will wear off before long. I shall be glad if you will send me an estimate for oiling the Lych gate. Will you ascertain if the parish or church council will take it over after it has been done up. If they won’t I suppose I may conclude that it is not wanted. With love from Maggie & self…’
