  • Scope and Content
This group of nineteenth century Orlebar family marriage settlements and related documents concerning the trusts established by them, appears to have been in the hands of the solicitor Charles Ranken and to have come into this collection through him. Inevitably this group of deeds is closely linked with the Orlebar family collection which is deposited in the County Record Office (catalogue OR). Much of the material in this group of deeds relates to the settlement of Hinwick House and other lands in Podington made on the marriage of Richard Orlebar and Maria Longuet in 1804 [V322], on the marriage of their eldest son Richard Longuet Orlebar to Sophia Parrott in 1831 [V324] and of their eldest son Richard to Frederica Rouse Boughton in 1861 [V326]. Also included is the marriage settlement of Richard Longuet Orlebar’s brother John (later Admiral) Orlebar and that of his cousin Helen Maria Orlebar to Captain Augustus John Burton. A group of letters, chiefly written to Charles Ranken, show some of the financial negotiations between the families concerned prior to the execution of a marriage settlement and also reveal family opposition to a match where the bridegroom’s fortune was small.
