  • Scope and Content
The intelligence you received from Mrs Costerton is substantially correct. .. A letter from Thomas himself dated February 20th mentions his intention of leaving home on the Tuesday following for the benefit of his health and that he had obtained the assistance of a Mr Gould from Baldock to take the Church for 3 months, at the end of which he proposes to resign the living. Mr Gorham has been informed of these proceedings and advises me to sell the living. In his reply he also says "In the actual state of things I greatly prefer that Mr Mudge should have the option. The living has been rendered undesirable. The congregation has been dispersed and the Rector brought into contempt. He has so made his ill-savour to come up, that this successor, if of the same family, will have no agreeable post. The accommodation of the house for pupils would be the only inducement for myself. A person of my age or even of Mr Mudge's could not afford to give a price equal to Thomas' life interest in the living. We could of course only purchase as an annuity for our own lives, and the older the buyer the less price would he give... I need hardly remind you that in selling the advowson you are not selling the net value of £200 p.a." A buyer will deduct for labour and dilapidations. All of these considerations would reduce the value for you. Would it be desirable for you ? "Where this poor creature is gone we have no idea. The Girl was utterly averse to the match, was crying all breakfast before they set off and the driver brought back word she was crying when they got into the chaise at Bedford. How strange that when he wrote to me, he should not even hint at his intended marriage! tho' he must suppose I should immediately hear of it" with note from his wife to Rhoda Mudge. Next Monday there will be a sale at Pertenhall to get rid of old things, and on 25th Mr Geary becomes a tenant at the Hill
