Many boys were released to work in agriculture or other war work due to the shortage of men. 1917 more of the same but less wet. Blackberries picked in Autumn. 3rd October 'admitted several fresh boys to the school fugitives from the London Air Raids.' 1918 more of the same. 15 July 'The Influenza epidemic and other causes account for a very low attendance' 18 November 'School reopened after the closure on account of the influenza epidemic which has caused several deaths in the parish: there are still many absentees on account of the illness.' 1919 22 January 'German Guns captured by the Beds Regiment on public view for a short time this morning: the boys were taken by the master to see them at the invitation of the officer in charge.' Severe frosts. Boys return to school from war work. 30 Sept 'Voluntarily resigned mastership of this school today Horace Heath Mill.' The school continued with temporary master in charge. Teacher shortages caused problems (written summary of temporary teachers in envelope at front of book). 23rd February 1920 'A young horse broke the shafts of a cart outside the school at playtime today. It then dashed through the school railings breaking them down & made straight for the school porch. An opportune closing of the outer door just averted great danger for as the boys were coming in from play many would have been knocked down in the porch.' '13 April [1920] Central School opened this morning by Bertram E L Perryman certificated unattached teacher Beds CC assisted by Miss Crowsley. 65 pupils from the various schools were enrolled. Mr Pinnock from Shire Hall left registers etc.' The log book ends when the school closed for the Whitsun holiday.
