  • Admin/biog history
St. Swithun's School is the product of a series of amalgamations and administrative changes that took place during the 20th century. In 1868 Church of England or National Schools for boys and for girls opened. By 1910 these were classed as a public elementary. A National Infants school opened in 1874 and became a public elementary in 1903. In 1920 a new Public Elementary Central Mixed School opened for 12 to 14 year olds and the boys and girls schools merged to become a mixed junior school. The central school was short lived as in 1924 it merged with the Church of England junior schools to become a public elementary mixed school. The Infants school came under the same headship as the rest of the school from 1927. In 1946 the school became a voluntary aided county primary and in 1951 a voluntary controlled county primary. It then became a lower school and in 1969 became St Swithun's Lower School.
