Order No.184 1. INTENTION The Battalion will relieve the 6th Royal Berks at BABOON CAMP tomorrow Dec 4th 1917. 2. STARTING POINT Railway Siding - INTERNATIONAL CORNER, where the Battalion will entrain at 1.40 p.m. for BOEZINGE. On arrival the Battalion will detrain and move to BABOON CAMP VIA CLARGES STREET, or Bridge at North End of BOEZINGE. 3. STARTING TIME 1.10 p.m. 4. ORDER OF MARCH Hd Qrs. A. D. B. and C Coys. 5. DRESS Full Marching Order; Jerkins will be worn underneath the tunic. Steel helmets will be worn. 6. MEALS Dinners at 12 noon. Tea on arrival at BABOON CAMP. The Qr.Mr will arrange for Cooking utensils to proceed with the lorries for BABOON CAMP and 1 Cook per Company will also proceed. 7. TRANSPORT 1st Line Transport and rear Battn Hd Qrs will move to MICHEL FARM (B.9.D.3.9.) Cookers will proceed to MICHEL FARM when Dinners have been served. Starting Point DE WIPPE CABARET 2 a.m. The Battalion Transport will follow the 11th Royal Fusiliers. 8. DETAILS Will move to H Camp under Capt.W.J.W.Colley M.C. Starting Time 2 p.m. 9. BAGGAGE Officers Trench Kit. 1 Blanket per man etc for Baboon camp will be dumped at Q. M. Stores by 8 a.m. Officers Kits and Blankets etc for "H" Camp will be dumped at the same time. the Pioneers will eport to the QuarterMaster at 8 a.m. for loading. 10. SURPLUS KIT 1 Hut is allotted to the Battalion in the Camp for Surplus Kit. O.C. "A" Coy will detail a fatigue party of 15 men to report to the Qr.Mr. at 9 a.m. the Qr.Mr. will arrange for a Storeman to remain with this Kit as Guard. 11. BILLETS Regimental Lines will be left clean, latrines disinfected, refuse removed and a certificate rendered to the Orderly Room by 12 noon. 12. BILLETING Hd Qrs and O.C.Coys will each detail one representative to proceed to BABOON CAMP and alloy accommodation for the Battalion. This party will report to 2/Lieut.Curtice at 10 a.m. 13. ENTRAINING Capt.S.R.Chapman will report to a representative of the 54th Infy. Bde. at ONDANK SIDING at 1 p.m. with entraining states. He will supervise the entraining of the Battalion; also the 12th Middlesex Regiment. 14. DUTIES On arrival at BABOON CAMP, O.C. "C" Coy will detail one N.C.O. and 3 men to take over the duties of the S.O.S. relay post, CANNES FARM from the 6th Royal Berks. Time 4.30 p.m. O.C. "D" Coy will detail 1 N.C.O. and 3 men to take over the duties of the S.O.S. relay post at U.26.d.6.8. from 6th Royal Berks. Time 4.30 p.m. Very Pistols and Lights to be taken over on relief. O.C. Royal Berks at BABOON CAMP in accordance with Order No.184 (see appendix 2) Baboon Camp 5-12-17 The Battalion provided Working Parties from Baboon Camp carrying up to the 11th Royal Fusiliers who hld the line. 6-12-17 The Battalion remained in support in Baboon Camp and again supplied carrying parties for the 11th Royal Fusiliers in the Front Line. 7-12-17 The Battalion still remained in Reserve to the 11th Royal Fusiliers and again supplied Working Parties. 7th Bn Bedfordshire Regt. Order No.170 (1) a. On the night of the 7th/8th the Bn will relieve the 11th Bn. Royal FUSILIERS in the Left SECTOR. b. Each man will carry two Water Bottles to be filled before starting. two days rations to be carried in Packs. B & A Coys will carry 1 pair of Gum Boots in pack. 8. Great coats of all men & personal belongings (packd in Haversack) will be placed in a Sandbag, labelled with his name, No & Coy. & dumped on duckboard track near C & D Coys' officers mess by 2.30 pm. Officers Kit & Blankets in Bundles of 10 to be dumped at same place and time. Camp Kettles and Mess Boxes to be ready by 10 pm for the Limbers and Mess Cart. 9. MEALS O.C. Coys will arrange for their men to have tea or soup by 8 pm and tea ready for the Food Containers by 9.30 p.m. 10. All Trench Stores, maps etc. will be carefully taken over and a list of same sent to O.R. by 6 am 8th inst. 11. Camp to be left clean, all refuse burnt and Latrines disinfected. Certificate to be rendered to O.R. 12. Completion of relief to be reported by the word "MARROW". (Sgd) Sidney Tabor Capt & A/Adjutant 7th (S) Bn. Bedford Regiment 8-12-17 The Battalion relieved the 11th Royal Fusiliers in the Left sub-sector of the line in front of HOUTHULST FOREST on the night of 7th and 8th. The relief was duly completed without incident. operation Orders attached N.170 (see appendix 2). For photographs of the line see Appendix 3. in the Line 9-12-17 The Battalion held the Left Sub-sector in the Front Line without incident. 10-12-17 The Battalion again held the line in the front of HOUTHULST FOREST without incident and carried out a certain amount of Wiring. 7th BN Bedfordshire Regt Ref Maps Belgium Sheet NW28 Broombeck Ed 3. 10 Dec 1917 1. The 7th Bn. Bedfordshire Regt will be relieved by the 7th Bn. Royal W.Kent Regt in the line on the night 10th/11th inst. 2. On completion of relief the 7th BN Bedfordshire Regt will move to "J" Camp. 3. Routes IN: - HUNTER STREET - LANGEMARK-BIKSCHOTE RD - CLARGES STREET OUT KOKUIT ROAD - HUNTER ST. 4. Guides will report to 7th BN R.West Kent Regt at BABOON CAMP on the morning of 10th inst in accordance with instruction already issued. 5. Relieving unit may be expected about 6 p.m. 6. Trench Mortars will be taken over by the 55th TMB in accordance with instruction issued to BN TM Officer. 7. The BN will proceed to "J" Camp by train leaving BOEZINGE (Broad Gauge) at 2 AM 11th inst detraining at INTERNATIONAL CORNER. 8. All Trench Stores, maps etc. will be carefully handed over on relief a receipt taken to be handed in to Orderly Room. 9. Gum Boots, spare water bottles will be handed in at BOEZINGE STN. Great care must be taken that all Gum boots, water bottles, socks etc are carried out of the trenches. 10. All Lewis Gun Drums actually in Reserve at COY or PN H.Qrs. will be handed over to the 7th R.W.KENT Regt. Only the 18 Drum per gun actually with the guns will be carried out. receipts for all drums handed will be obtained from the 7th R.W.KENT REGT and handed in to the Adjutant on arrival at "J" Camp to enable these drums to be recovered at the transport lines. 11. First Line Transport will remain at MICHEL FARM until the new transport lines are fit for occupation. 12. Completion of Relief will be reported to BN H.Qrs by code word "MEAT". 13. H.Qrs 7th BN Bedfordshire Regt will close at U.6.c.33 on completion of relief and will reopen at "J" Camp at 3 AM 11th inst. INTENTION The Battalion will proceed by ROUTE MARCH tomorrow December 16th to the HARINGE AREA. 2. STARTING POINT "J" CAMP. 3. TIME 10.10 a.m. 4. ORDER OF MARCH H.Q. "D" "A" Drums "C" "B" 5. BAGGAGE All kits, orderly Room Stores, Coy. Stores, Mess Boxes, Workshops, Mens packs, etc. will be dumped at Q.M.Stores by 8 a.m. 9. CAMP The Company lines must be left clean; also inside of huts, latrines emptied and refuse removed to incinerators by 8 a.m. 10. ADVANCE PARTY One representative for Battalion Hd.Qrs. and one per Company will report to 2/Lieut.Flavell at 8 a.m. and proceed on cycles to the new camp. The Advance Party will meet the Battalion on its arrival at Cross Roads W.25.d.5.7. 11. SICK will act as loading and unloading party and proceed with the lorries. To report to the Q.M. at 7.45 a.m. 12. ROAD CONTROL 100 yds distance will be maintained between Coys. captain W.J.W.Colley, M.C. will ride 500 yards in front on the Battalion and will warn traffic control of the approach of the Battalion, and will see that the proper distance is being maintained from the unit in front (11th Bn. Royal Fusiliers). 13. RUNNERS On arrival in new area L/Cpl.Brett will detail H.Q.Runners to reconnoitre position of Brigade H.Q. without delay. 14. REAR PARTY R.E.Platoon and T.M.B. will remain behind under 2/Lieut.Richards to clean up camp. Rendezvous at International Corner at 2 p.m. and march under orders of Senior Officer to new area. (SGD) S.TABOR, CAPTAIN AND A/ADJUTANT. 7TH (S) BATTALION BEDFORDSHIRE REGIMENT 16-12-17 The Battalion moved from "J" Camp to CLAUDE CHAPPE CAMP, [ROESBRUGGE] HARINGE AREA for Rest period. general Sadleir Jackson took the March - Past and was pleased with the general turn-out of the Battalion. the Battalion arrived in new area in time for dinner; each company being billeted in a separate hut, and one detached Company in Northampton Lines. (3) Signallers, T.M.B. & Scouts will be trained under arrangements to be made by Officers Commanding these Sections CLAUDE CHAPPE CAMP 17-12-17 Capt.H.C.Browning took over duties with the Battalion again having been attached to Brigade. A course of five weeks' Training was commenced, as per programme (see appendix I). Major Percival proceeded on short leave to England. 18-12-17 The cinema Hall was burnt down at 10.30 p,. Fire picquets turned ut and the Divisional Fire Brigade attended, but the Hall was completely demolished. A certain amount of danger existed through proximity of other huts and the Horse Transport Lines, which were kept doused with water and fortunately escaped damage. 19-12-17 Training as per programme (see Appendix I). 20-12-17 Training as per grogramme (see Appendix I) and Inter Platoon Football Matches. 21-12-17 Lieut.Col.G.P.Mills, D.S.O. proceeded on leave to England. Training was carried out as per programme (see App.I). lecture by captain Long, R.E., on "Interception of Wireless Messages and Telephonic Messages" at 2.30 pm. Captain W.J.W.Colley, M.C. took over command of the Battn. 22-12-17 Training as per programme. (SGD) S.TABOR CAPTAIN AND A/ADJUTANT 7th (S) BATTALION BEDFORDSHIRE REGIMENT. 24-12-17. 25-12-17, 26-12-17 Christmas Holidays. No Parades were held. Christmas Dinners were held by Companies separately from 12 noon to 4 p.m. each man received a Quart of English Beer and Turkeys were obtained from PARIS. There were also Hams, nuts and sweets provided; dinners generally considered a great success. Gen.Sadleir Jackson went round the Brigade to see the Battalions at the Christmas Dinners, and met with a great reception in this Battalion. The Officers held a Dinner at 7 pm in ROESBRUGGE [HARINGE] which, with the efforts of Mr.Davies, the Battalion Mess President, was a great success. A draft of 75 O.Rs. arrived at 11.45 am on 25th and were greatly surprised at having Xmas Dinner provided for them. they were chiefly men from 19-25 years of age, and largely from the Sussex district. 27-12-17 Training was carried out as per training programme (see App.I) Football in the afternoon. Capt.S.Tabor, Act. Adjutant proceeded to England on leave & handed over his duties to Capt.H.C.Browning. 28-12-17 Training was carried out as per Training Programme (see App.I) The draft was inspected and definitely allotted to Companies. The Battalion had the use of the Divisional Baths in ROESBRUGGE and clean clothing. 7TH (S) BATTALION BEDFORDSHIRE REGIMENT TRAINING PROGRAMME for 28/12/17 "A" Range Grouping 9 am to 12.30 pm. INTENTION The G.O.C. will inspect the Battalion tomorrow, 29/12/17 at 8 a.m. on Battalion Training Ground. Afterward Tactical Scheme 2. HOUR OF START Companies will move off in time to be on parade ground by 7.45 a.m. 3. GENERAL INSTRUCTION (a) The Battalion will be formed up in Mass Battalion Hd.Qrs. on right Coy.Hd.Qrs. in rear of Companies. (b) R.E.Platoon will parade with Battalion Hd.Qrs. under Sergt.Weston. They will draw 1 pick and 1 shovel for every three men, from the Quarter-masters Stores. (c) Stretcher Bearers and Vickers Gun Section will parade with Battalion Head Quarters. (d) S.A.A. All live ammunition will be left in huts. Pouches must be inspected before moving off. (e) Lewis Guns. 4 Drums per TEAM will be carried. 4. DRESS FIGHTING ORDER. Haversacks to be worn resting on shoulder. Mess Tins with covers, handle of Mess Tin through strap of haversack. Steel Helmets will be worn wit hstrap under point of chin. Box respirators at the "Alert" Position. No Rifle or Breech Covers will be carried. 5. GUIDE 2/Lieut.R.A.Stiles will meet the G.O.C. at Bde.Hd.Qr.Mess at 7.40 a.m. and guide him to Bn.Parade Ground. 6. MEALS REVEILLE 6 a.m. BREAKFAST 6.30 a.m. DINNERS on return to camp. 7. SIGNALLERS Will carry Signalling Lamps, and dress will be Rifle, Box Respirators and water Bottle. 8. TRANSPORT 1st Line Transport with Cookers, will be formed up by 7.45 a.m. in rear of the Battalion on Battn. Parade Ground. (Note: Battn. General Sadleir Jackson inspected the Battn and Transport at 8 a.m. and witnessed a Tactical Scheme carried out by the Battn. during the morning. Two Companies of the Royal Fusiliers and a detachment of Vickers Guns supplied an enemy for this scheme. At the Conference afterwards the General pointed out the excellent manner in which the N.C.O's and Section Commanders handled their Commands, and the intelligent manner in which all ranks carried out their duties. In the tactical Scheme it was generally considered to be very much above the average. 7TH (S) BATTALION BEDFORDSHIRE REGIMENT TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR 29th DECEMBER 1917 The Battalion will parade on Battalion Training Ground at 10 a.m., and form up in Mass; Battalion Head Quarters on right of Battalion, and Company Head Quarters in rear of each Company. Transport will not Parade. DRESS: Fighting Order, less Steel Helmets. Bomb Buckets, Bombs and Rifle Grenades will be carried. These should be drawn from the Quartermaster tonight if not already in possession. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. ALL COMPANIES Range Practice.
