  • Title
Panoramic View near the end of the gardens. Some distance N.W. of Archer's Pavilion, with an obelisk in the centre of a circular pond, this in turn is connected by a straight wide stretch of water to one of the pillars at the end of the 'octagon' lake as shown on Jn. Rocque's plan of 1735. There is however no obelisk, circular pond or stretch of water showen on either Knyff's plan (c.1705) or Rocque's plan (1735). It seems extremely unlikely that the large stretch of water and pond should be made and the obelisk erect only for the former to be filled in and the latter to be removed within the space of 20 years, at the most. The obelisk is similar in design to that shown on Rocque's plan but this used to stand (until 1933) near the Silsoe entrance to the park. This view therefore would appear to be the artist's impression of what the gardens might be like, with the obelisk in this position. 11'' x 31'' (Signed). (cf. 33/124).
