Tillemans was born in Holland and came to England in 1708. Began by copying the paintings of the old masters and then 'becoming known
to amateurs and persons of quality, he was constantly employed to paint views of country seats with figures and buildings, or landscapes
with sporting subjects such as horses and dogs'.
Died at Norton Haugh, Suffolk, 5 Dec 1734. Was employed by Jn Bridges (d. 1724) to illustrate his 'History of Northamptonshire' and made
over 500 drawings for this work - see D.N.B.
It would appear that he could have been employed at Wrest Park, in some instances, to give impressions of the finished gardens with monuments and canals, which were in fact never placed in those positions.
