Letter from Arthur Thorn, 147 Lower Richmond Road, Putney [Surrey] to J.H.Hoare, Dunstable "Re yours of the 18th. E.Bray Tithe This is the first I have heard of this matter. If you are the Steward I shall be glad to know my liability in having this bit of land made freehold in plain figures. When taking over I was informed I must be admitted to copyhold & Paid several Pounds for the privilege. I certainly am not prepared to pay a like ammount [sic] to get out of it, at fourteen days' notice. I think your Lord of the Manor or whoever it is must think this is Russia or Germany. I am not willing to be made to buy from him at his Price & then sell back to him at his price & I don't think any English Law can make me. I am open for a straitforward [sic] bid for this previous half a rood of ground if he wants it. Hoping to hear from you shortly. With Season Greeting. Yours Arthur Thorn Age 64".
