Letter from James Saunders of 20 Abingdon Street, Westminster [Middlesex] "at Towcester" to Frederick Farr, Dunstable "On my return home I found your letter. I think you wrote without knowledge of the circumstances of my claim on your Trust Estate. 1st as to your remark of the claim being exhorbitant [sic] you are the only person of 114 persons (who have to pay my charges) who has expressed any opinion as to its fairness or unfairness and as to the facts The Tithe Commssrs for England & Wales have confirmed that my charges are Fair and Reasonable so you must be in total Ignorance of the matter. 2nd as to the want of terms you are probably unaware or Ignore that fact that my claim is on the lands & not on the owner for the [unreadable word] suppose you have no funds for 10 years. Do you think that a Public Charge would stand over till you had funds. It is for me to consider how long (after giving you two notices and after your hasty ill advised letter) I am inclined to wait. Your Solicitor will tell you that the Tithe Act gives you power to borrow as Trustee and every other power you can require to enable Trustees to pay such claims on Tithable Lands and therefore before fixing when I shall require this money actually to be paid I will thank you to consult him and I shall expect an answer ten days from this time (say 1st August). If you do not think Public Notice on the Church Door sufficient your Solicitor can get a counterpart from the Tithe Office. I am sorry to write so Definitely to you as everyone knows [unreadable words] of Dunstable that I am the last man to enforce payment when a favour is asked and I trust they especially know that I can vindicate unmerited Insults
