- Scope and Content"W. [Willie, i.e. Thomas William Dell Brooks] has applied to me to lend him 400 to pay off the residue of his old Debts & prevent his Living being sequestered as his Creditors are now pressing him to such an extent he must go thro' the Bankruptcy Court unless he can get immediate relief. I have told him I cannot afford to do it. Can you or Mother lend him this Sum. If so the Interest is 20 again I would not mind perhaps being Surety for its repayment and the Capital would be repaid within two years after dearest Mother's death , it could with safety be secured by a Bond from himself & wife, or other charge upon his life Interests under Father's will. His interest you know would be paid by Mr.Green Senior as Father's Executor to John Green Jr. & myself as his Trustees, ... ... receiving as such Trustees the usual notice to pay the Interest to you (or other Lender) instead of them until the whole 400 was returned. I do not think much, if any, risk would be run, & the arrangements might be safely carried thro' . This is the only way that suggests itself to me to save his establishment being broken up, and if you or dearest Mother can make the required advance, Mr.Green had better be involved to carry it through for him & you in the usual way. He seems that Mother allows you & yours free board & lodging &c and does not make a similar allowance to him and his. His idea seems to be that if you were living away from Flitwick Mother would have so many hundred a year which she could, were she so minded, divide in equal proportions between her 3 sons. I told him I did not like to refer again to his old sore but he begged I would do so & communicate his destitute condition to dear Mother's care. Maddie: had a nice line from her Mother this morning saying she & all were well on the 12 inst."
