- Scope and ContentThe Municipal Corporation Act of 1835 vested the government of Bedford in a mayor, 6 aldermen and eighteen councillors, with a town clerk and assistant officers, the corporate body being styled 'the mayor and burgesses of the town of Bedford'. The first eighteen councillors were elected in December 1835. From 1836 one third of the seats came up for election each year and the elections took place on the 1st November. The Municipal Act split the town into 2 wards, East and West, and each ward elected 9 councillors.
