A regular army battalion, the 1st Battalion was at Mullingar [Ireland] on the outbreak of war as part of 15th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division; it landed in France on 16 Aug 1914 and remained on the Western Front throughout the war, except for a brief tour of duty in Italy between December 1917 and April 1918. The 5th Division comprised as follows:
