    Brief history: 1858 Regiment for the first time composed of two Battalions. Saw service in Canada at time of Fenian raids from United States. 1870 Stationed at the Curragh, Ireland 1890 Short Tour on the Mediterranean 1891 Served in India, playing an important part in the relief of Chitral in 1895 1907 Transferred to Aden 1908 Returned to England in December 1914 Battalion embarked for France in August, served with 5th Division throughout the War 1920 - 1922 Served in Ireland 1922 - 1925 In England 1925 Sent to Malta 1927 - 1929 Tour of duty in China, stationed at Shanghai, Hong Kong etc. Moved in 1929 to India. 1938 - 1941 Embarked for Palestine, served there & in Egypt and in Greece and Syria. Took part in Relief of Tobruk. 1942 - 1943 At Singapore when surrender took place, 8 escaped, many became prisoners of war. Those surviving sent to India, eventually training as Chindits in Burma. 1948 Amalgamated with 2nd Battalion.
