From: Samuel Whitbread I at Brighton To: Thomas Strong I thank you for the kind visit you made here & heartily wish could have [unreadable word] it more agreable. At last I have found out what you must have expected that my spirits are not equal to the undertaking. I was unwell with the head ache [day of the week unreadable due to hole in letter] evening but now thank God quite calm & easy & shall endeavour to keep so. The raising of the money separate from my other concerns I think could have been done but perhaps some inconveniences that I am not use3d to might have attended it & another such a summ might be wanted sooner than I expect; however that could have been by Trade and the transforming the place as we suggested would require more attention than my case, & that I am by no means sure of. Therefore I must drop it although it is with reluctance for I doe not think it dear if it includes the Timber if the Title & transaction proved clear & honourable I have written to Mr.Maysey this post on a little business & told him that I have withstood another temptation, & offer'd on lower terms (of same property) which come through you [blank in the text] & added that if such had taken effect as my son wish'd it had that there is a probability it might have proved a good reason for him to mind Trade as the only way to discharge it without much difficulty. Compliments to Mrs.Strong
